Repairing Your Trailer’s Deck
Trailers are built to handle tough jobs. However, tough and indestructible are not the same thing. If you want to keep your deck trailer performing at its best for years to come, you need to perform regular maintenance. That is why Ben Nelson Golf and Outdoor Equipment has created this guide to help you maintain and repair your trailer’s deck.
Gather Tools
Start by getting your tools together. At the minimum, you should have a hammer, screwdrivers, a drill with multiple attachments, bolts, washers, nuts, and self-tapping screws. You may also need a method of measuring the length and width of your trailer’s floorboards so that you can swap them out more easily.
Remove Old Boards
When it comes to removing old, rotting, or otherwise damaged boards, you have a few options. You might choose to simply unscrew the screws, but depending upon the circumstances this might also force you to saw the boards in order to take them out, which means you will need to be careful to avoid sawing the metal frame. You might find it easier to pull up the boards with a pry bar, though this will take a lot of effort.
Clean Frame
Next, you will need to clean the metal around the bottom of your trailer’s frame. We recommend sticking a wire brush attachment onto a drill to make removing dust and debris easier. You should then grind down or hammer off the screw heads.
Replace Wood
Once all these tasks have been completed, you can finally lay down the new boards and anchor them securely to the frame. Start with the boards at the end and sides before moving on to the boards at the bottom. Make sure to screw through the trailer deck boards into the metal frame beneath them so that they will be held securely in place.
