With spring here, your grass is starting to grow again. Soon, you’ll need to dust off your lawn mower and give your yard a trim. However, you first need to prepare your lawn. Otherwise, both your lawn and your mower can end up getting damaged. If you’re not sure where to start with lawn mower spring proper, this guide from Ben Nelson Golf and Outdoor Equipment can help you get started.

Clear Debris From Your Lawn

Debris caught in your mower’s undercarriage can cause minor to serious damage. Clearing away these debris won’t just help you avoid damaging your mower, it will also make it easier for your lawn to absorb any fertilizer you might be using.

Nourish Your Lawn

Many people use products like fertilizer, weedkiller, and insecticides to encourage their lawns to grow and keep insects and weeds away from their yards. For best results, only put down these products after your first mowing of the year. If you’re using new grass seed to fix a bald patch in your yard, wait until the grass is at least two inches high or the same height as the rest of your lawn before cutting it.

Prepare Your Mower

Your mower itself also needs to be prepped. Sharpen your lawn mower’s blade if necessary and remove stray debris from the undercarriage. Don’t forget to check that the air filters and spark plugs are still working! If something seems to be wrong with your mower and you’re not sure how to fix it, schedule a service appointment immediately.

Cut Your Lawn

Let your lawn mower warm up in the sun for about an hour before your first cutting of the year. The first cutting should ideally remove about ⅓ of the overall grass blade.
