Apr. 3 2020 Safety By ___

Taking care of your lawn or a client’s lawn is best tackled with the right set of tools, and the right set of tools will come with a name you can rely on. Husqvarna Power equipment will give you the performance you need for an entire day in your yard, but you’ll still want to be taking care of yourself. Some of these machines come with some risk if you’re not using them properly, which is why Ben Nelson Golf and Outdoor Equipment has provided some tips to keep you safe when you’re working. You can also contact our locations in Madison and Biloxi, Mississippi, serving Jackson, for additional information on safe power equipment use. We also serve our neighbors in Mobile, Alabama.

Review Each Manual

The first thing you’ll want to do is pull out the owner’s manual for each one of your Husqvarna machines. While we can give you tips that apply to all products broadly, the only way to understand safe operation and responsible ownership for any one particular piece of power equipment is to look at the specific recommendations from the company. You can also find things like maintenance tips and other helpful information, so giving the manual a quick read-through is a good idea.

If you can’t find one of your manuals, head to the Husqvarna website to download a new one.

Pay Attention

One of the most important safety tips to remember is to simply pay attention. Staying engaged with dangerous equipment is by far the best way to avoid an accident. This isn’t just about operating the equipment. You’ll also want to keep an eye on your surroundings. You never know when another person or a pet could be nearby and you don’t want to involve them in any serious accidents either.

Safety Gear

What you’re wearing is also important. Odds are, you’re probably already planning on wearing something old or something you don’t mind getting a little dirty. But you also want to make sure you’re properly covered. Something durable that will protect you as you’re working. This might mean jeans and long sleeves, even if it’s hot out.

You’ll also want to include thick gloves, ear protection, protective eyewear, and headgear when necessary. If you’re working with pesticides or other chemicals, you’ll want to be wearing special suits that will prevent you from getting these chemicals on your skin and inhaling them.

Care for Your Body

When you’re working outside, it’s also important to take care of your body. If it’s warm out, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and taking breaks in the shade. If it’s chilly out, wear layers for proper insulation. Also make sure you’re near a first-aid kit and don’t be out there alone. You might appreciate having someone else there to help if something happens.

Finally, it’s just a good idea to stay mindful of your body’s signals. If you’ve got some muscle aches and soreness, stop for a moment to stretch them out. Give yourself a break when you need them and treat symptoms of exhaustion and dehydration before they get worse.

OSHA Laws

If you’re working for a professional landscaping company, or employed in some other business that works with Husqvarna Power equipment, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with OSHA laws, or Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This is also important if you yourself are employing people to use equipment for your company.

OSHA is the organization designed to create laws that protect professional workers from their work environments. It obligates companies to provide proper protective gear and invest in equipment that’s safe for employees to use, along with many other concerns. Both employers and employees should be familiar with these laws, so even though it can be a long read, you’ll want to visit the OSHA site to learn more.

With the right steps and a little careful planning, you can use your Husqvarna Power equipment safely and productively no matter what kind of project you’re tackling. And if you’re tackling a project that requires tools you don’t have, contact Ben Nelson Golf and Outdoor Equipment to find the right tools for you. We proudly serve those in Madison, Biloxi, and Jackson, Mississippi, as well as our neighbors in Mobile, Alabama.
