Clear Debris
The first step that you’ll want to take is clearing debris off your lawn. Take some time to remove any dry leaves, branches, dead vegetation, and so on from your yard before starting your lawn care routine. Debris can get caught in your equipment and cause extensive damage.
Prepare Equipment
One of the most important aspects of lawn care that you’ll need to think about is maintaining your tools. Your lawn mower is your primary piece of equipment, but you may have other tools, too, that you use to tend to your yards. So, you must make sure that they are all in good working order to prevent them from harming your lawn.
Perform light maintenance to get your gear up and functional. You’ll want to sharpen your mower’s blades, change the oil and oil filters, check your spark plugs, and fill up your machine’s gas tank before you start using it.
Add Fertilizer
You’ll want to provide your lawn with some extra nourishment after the winter season is over. So, you’ll want to add fertilizer and pesticides or weed killers to bring your yards back in top shape and health.
Also, you’ll want to focus on any bare patches on your lawn by spreading seeds there and watering the seeds regularly. However, avoid mowing those spots until your bare patches have grass grown at least 2” high.
Trim the Grass
Another lawn care tip that we recommend to our customers is following a regular schedule when tending to their yards.
Ideally, you should mow your lawn every five days or so, at least for the first few months of spring and summer. This will help you prevent overgrowth and save you the trouble of cutting excessively tall grasses, which can harm root growth.
Also, you must remember not to cut more than one-third of the grass blades at once. Set the blades high when you bring your mower out for the first cut of the season and gradually lower the height with each cut. In addition, you’ll want to avoid cutting your grass too short, as it can make it more likely for the sun to scorch your lawn.
Take Safety Measures
You must have all safety measures in place when using your lawn mower. You must make sure that:
- There aren’t any kids or pets on the lawn when you’re using your machine.
- You are familiar with the owner’s manual for your mower and know when and how to service your machine.
- You never leave your running mower unattended.
- You are extra cautious when mowing on slopes.
We hope these tips help you take care of your lawn. If you need more advice or help upgrading your machine to the latest model, visit Ben Nelson Golf and Outdoor Equipment.
